West Bengal Election Results 2026: BJP Makes History, Mamata Loses Her Own Seat

The West Bengal Assembly Election results for 2026 are out, and they have changed the state's political picture completely. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won more than 200 seats out of 294 in the state assembly. This is the first time in the state's history that the BJP has come to power in West Bengal after years of trying. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which ruled the state for 15 years under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been pushed to around 80 seats, a massive drop from their previous performance. The Congress and the Left parties have managed only a handful of wins.

Mamata Banerjee Loses Bhabanipur Seat

The biggest headline of the day is that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost her own seat in Bhabanipur. BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, who is also the Leader of the Opposition, defeated her by over 15,000 votes. This is a major personal blow for Mamata, as Bhabanipur is the seat she had won in a by-election and considered her safe ground.

Note: Suvendu Adhikari defeated sitting CM Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by 15,105 votes, one of the most talked-about results of this election.

Key Winners and Losers

1. First BJP Win BJP's

Saikat Panja won the Monteswar seat by defeating TMC's Chowdhuri Siddiqullah with a margin of 14,798 votes. This was the first confirmed BJP win of the day when counting began.

2. First TMC Win TMC's

Reyat Hossain Sarkar won the Bhagawangola seat by a big margin of over 56,000 votes, defeating the CPI(M) candidate. This was one of the few strong wins for the Trinamool Congress on the day.

3. Congress Leader Loses in Baharampur

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who has been a strong face in West Bengal politics for years, lost his Baharampur assembly seat to BJP's Subrata Maitra by a margin of 17,548 votes. This is another significant defeat for the opposition block.

4. How Counting Went on May 4

Vote counting started at 8 AM on Monday, May 4, 2026. Early trends pointed strongly in the BJP's favor. By afternoon, the BJP was ahead in 192 out of 293 seats, while the TMC was leading in 96. By evening, the BJP had crossed the majority mark of 148 seats, making a BJP government in West Bengal almost certain.

Only about 47% of votes had been counted by mid-afternoon, so the final numbers kept changing. But the direction was clear: the BJP was heading for a landslide.

5. Voter Turnout Was Record-Breaking

This election saw more than 90% voter turnout across both phases of polling. That is one of the highest turnout figures in the history of Indian state elections. The high turnout was seen as a sign of just how much the people of West Bengal wanted to make their voice heard in this election.

6. What TMC and Others Are Saying

Mamata Banerjee and the TMC raised concerns about the vote count, saying the results looked "fishy." They claimed over 100 seats were "stolen." Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also echoed these concerns on social media, drawing comparisons to past elections. However, the Election Commission has not confirmed any irregularities. Suvendu Adhikari, speaking after the results, called it a result of "Hindu consolidation" in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the BJP headquarters in a traditional Bengali dhoti and kurta to celebrate the victory with party workers.

7. What This Means for West Bengal

The BJP's win ends 15 years of TMC rule in the state. Mamata Banerjee, who has been the face of Bengal politics for over a decade, now finds herself without a seat in the assembly. The state will now have its first BJP government, and the party will need to choose a new Chief Minister. For the Left and Congress, these results show how far they have fallen in a state where they once ruled for decades. With very few wins between them, the road back to relevance in Bengal looks very long.
