Ujjaini Express Derailment Near Rishikesh: 3 Coaches Derail, No One Hurt

Three coaches of the Ujjaini Express came off the tracks near Rishikesh on Monday night. The good news is that no one was hurt because there were no passengers on the train at the time.

The incident happened around 9:40 pm near the Khand Gaon area, close to the Yog Nagri railway station. The train was not carrying any passengers when it derailed; it was simply being moved to the railway yard after completing its journey.

What Exactly Happened?

Railway officials said the train was going through the yard area when the locomotive hit the buffer, which is the metal stop at the end of the shunting line. The impact put too much pressure on the coaches behind the engine.

Because of that pressure, one coach was thrown completely off track. Another coach bent and buckled in the middle. In total, three coaches of the train were damaged in the accident.

A shunting operation is a routine process where railway staff move empty trains from the platform to a nearby yard or storage area after passengers have gotten off. It is a normal daily activity at most railway stations.

About the Ujjaini Express

The Ujjaini Express runs between Lakshmibai Nagar station in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and Yog Nagri Rishikesh station in Uttarakhand. The train covers a long distance connecting central India to the foothills of the Himalayas.

Yog Nagri Rishikesh is a relatively new and well-known station in the area, and trains arriving here are regularly moved to the yard after their final stop.

No Passengers, No Injuries

Railway officials confirmed that the train was completely empty at the time of the accident. Since the derailment happened during a shunting move and not during a regular passenger run, no travellers were at risk. No injuries have been reported.

Local railway staff reached the spot quickly after the incident. Senior officials were informed, and a team was sent to assess the damage to the coaches and the track.

What Happens Next?

Railway teams will now inspect the damaged coaches and the track in the yard area. The coaches will be examined to check how much repair work is needed. Officials will also look into why the locomotive hit the buffer to make sure such an incident does not happen again.

No statement has been made yet on how long it will take to repair the coaches or whether the train's regular schedule will be affected in the coming days.

The Northern Railway zone is looking into the matter. More details are expected to come out once the official inquiry is completed.
